CHAPTER SEVEN

IT WAS quite strange, being out this early in the day. She wasn’t just sitting on her front porch, gazing at the river, as she usually did. She was out walking down the main street in Lexington and not seriously nervous about it. A little nervous, of course. But the butterflies in her stomach were merely fluttering, not pounding.

Dani smiled, pleased with this bit of progress, even though she’d had to force herself to get to this point—a little self-nagging a while ago when she’d dawdled too long in the shower, then some scolding at the closet when she had been undecided between the green and the peach T-shirts. Obviously, she had been stalling. She’d known that, and once she had filled her mind with what she was going to do this morning for Robby, her pace had picked up some. Admittedly, though, she’d almost gone into a quickstep when she’d thought about meeting Cameron. For whatever reason, he was her literal bump out the front door and her prod to the front walk and on out the rusty gate to the street.

So why the interest?

She did like him. More than that, she liked being with him. Maybe this new attitude was simply a need for some adult companionship. Heaven only knew, she’d shut herself off from it all this time. In the hospital, in the rehab center, staying with family and friends, she’d shut herself off completely from everything. So, yes, that had to be it! She needed adult companionship. That’s why her pulse was quickening just the slightest, thinking about him. Cameron was a step back into the real world for her.

On her way by Nora Carston’s bakery, Dani glanced in the window at the lovely pastries on display. Nora knew how to arrange them to make them tempting, and she couldn’t resist, so she ducked inside, amid the wonderful smells wafting out from the kitchen and the friendly jingling of the bells on the door.

“Dani!” Nora cried, running around the counter to greet her with a hug. “How have you been?”

“Getting better,” she said. “It takes time, but I’m coming along.”

“I hear that you and that handsome doctor are about to start raising a child together. That little boy you found during that awful accident?”

That statement turned a few heads in the waiting line. “Not raise him. We’re going to care for him until he has a permanent home. They wanted to send him to an institution and Cameron volunteered to keep him for a while, and I’m going to help while Cameron’s at work. That’s all it is.”

“Well, it’s a generous thing you’re doing, Dani. I know you’ve had a tough time of it lately, but I think this will be good for you. It’s about time you had a boyfriend again, too, and we all love Dr. Enderlein.”

“But I don’t…” Her words were cut off by the jingling bell over Nora’s door, and the old woman flit away, leaving Dani alone with a mouthful
